The first step of problem solving is to identify who’s got the problem. In order to create a great product or stable business model you need to have a well articulated understanding of your customer (or user). This is achieved by humanizing your customer, e.g. by giving him a name and defining what kind of car he drives and where he would like to go for vacation.
It’s crucial to understand that both persona and problem scenarios can be based on quality observations of real people only. Get in touch with your persona and test and validate your assumptions on how you would solve their problem and how they would react. Find out whether you’re right or wrong, stay focused on getting better and continuously improve both your persona and your value proposition.
Defining user stories rewards you with a precise understanding on what your product needs to be and do. Use them to create prototypes and then proceed to test them, test them and test them again. You don’t always need to code your prototype. Use paper, role plays or lego to present your solution to potential customers – and listen carefully.
Now come up with the true value propositions to solve the problem and make your key assumptions. They should go along the lines „If we ‘do something’ for ‘a certain persona’ then ‘they will respond in some measurable way’. Formulate your assumptions as specific as possible in order to get the most out of the answers you’ll be receiving during testing and experimenting.
Find out what kind of problem(s) your persona has. Creating problem scenarios enables you to identify specific objectives for your product. Make sure it is a real problem and actually observable. Understand how your potential customer is currently solving the problem. Your solution has to be better and people need to care about it. If no one cares, no one will pay for it.
Now that you have optimized your persona several times, changed your assumptions countlessly, created dozens of user stories and prototypes and gathered tons of valuable customer feedback, you are ready to go into production and sales. Ensure that the product you build is something to solve a true problem and is valued by your customers.
